Thoratang Nallah Bridge Re-collapse; show-cause notice issued to respondent *The construction of this bridge is beyond engineering skill or what?
Port Blair, July 13: As per
reliable information from the office of Assistant Commissioner (MA) on 12 July,
2019, says that the Bailey bridge on Thoratang Nallah near Swadeshnagar has
collapsed again on July 11, 2019 at around 22.00 hrs. The bridge had collapsed
earlier on 12th June, 2019 consequent to which its repair was undertaken by
NHIDCL through the contractor Ravi Realcon Pvt. Ltd. who had duly given safety
certificate on July 11 after its completion following which the bridge was
thrown open for public transport for load class up to 40 ton capacity with
effect from July 11. As per sources, the Assistant Commissioner (MA) issued a show-cause
notice in this regard asking the General Manager of National Highway and
Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (NHIDCL) to furnish reply within 5
days, failing which, necessary action as deemed fit will be initiated ex-parte.
Collapse of the bridge within 9 hours after it
was restored prima-facia appears to be a case of faulty design/use of
sub-standard material in its repair, which is a matter of investigation. In the
notice it is directed to show-cause as to why an action should not be initiated
against you for negligence while supervising the repair work of the bridge,
thus jeopardizing the public safely and endangering their lives and
properties,” said the Show-cause notice issued to the General Manager of NHIDCL
on July 12, 2019.
