TMI Correspondent

Port Blair, July 12: In a frightening incident that unfolded today at late evening, a major fire broke out in an old residential house located in the School Line area, sending shockwaves among the citizens. Thanks to the prompt action of the local fire department, the blaze was brought under control, averting further destruction and potential loss of life. Emergency medical services were on standby, ready to provide assistance if needed, but fortunately, there were no injuries reported in connection with the incident.

Witnesses described the scene as chaotic and terrifying, with the crackling of flames and the sound of breaking an LPG Cylinder echoing through the neighborhood. Concerned residents gathered outside, their faces filled with worry for the occupants of the burning house.

As per sources, the fire erupted between 6.30 and 7.00 pm today, causing thick plumes of smoke to billow into the sky, as flames engulfed the old semi-RCC double storey residential building. Startled neighbors quickly dialed emergency services, alerting them to the rapidly escalating situation. The urgency of the call prompted an immediate response from the fire department, with multiple fire trucks rushing to the scene initially with less water but, later they swung into full-fledged action. Altogether 7 water browsers each made 2 trips and after about 2 grueling hours, the firefighters successfully contained the blaze.

Thankfully, there were no reported casualties, as the occupants of the house had managed to evacuate safely before the fire consumed their home. However, the residential property where the fire originated suffered significant destruction, leaving it in ruins.

The local community has rallied together to support the affected family, offering, clothing, and other essential items. The Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman Ms. Veditha Reddy, IAS alongwith other officials have also pledged their assistance, ensuring that the family receives the necessary support during the challenging time.

It is reported that altogether 20 members of the joint family were used to reside in that old semi-RCC double storey residential building. Fire investigators have initiated a thorough examination to determine the cause of the fire. While the investigation is ongoing, preliminary assessments suggest that an electrical malfunction may have been responsible for the ignition or short-circuit. Further investigation is underway.

Some un-silent majority at the fire spot allege that, “the fire tenders initially came with less water and later came properly, and the force of water also became a challenge for the firefighters at the beginning. However, it is a main roadside accident but what if any incident takes place inside any congested Basthis (colonies) in Port Blair?”

Campaign for free access to Cellular Jail gains support, calls for National Pilgrimage Status

Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept 25: A campaign demanding greater respect for India's martyrs at the historic Cellular Jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has gained momentum. The movement calls for the jail, a "National Memorial," to be declared a "National Pilgrimage Site." Activists are advocating for free entry to the light and sound show for island residents and a nominal fee of Rs.30 for outside tourists. The organizers argue that, just as the central and state governments provide free religious pilgrimages, similar provisions should be made for free visits to Cellular Jail, also known as "Kala Pani." Supporters emphasize the importance of including the jail's revolutionary history in school curricula. They believe that officially recognizing the site as a national pilgrimage location would be a fitting tribute to the martyrs and freedom fighters who were imprisoned there. The campaign coincides with the birth anniversary of revolutionary marty...
