Port Blair, Nov 01: Of
late it has been observed that multitude of digital media channels/ social
media handlers have mushroomed up across Andaman and Nicobar Islands, at one
aspect, it is a boon with the advancement of digital technology, and on other
aspect these unregulated digital media channels/ social media handlers may
jeopardize the strategic importance of these islands in more than several ways.
As you all aware that
Andaman and Nicobar Islands lies at a critical juncture in the Indian Ocean and
its has ability to support India's maritime security, surveillance, response
capabilities, and geopolitically as the islands are situated at the crossroads
of the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea, making it a crucial point in the
region's geopolitics. Any endeavour to development, be it corporate or
industrial in these Islands require clearance from the Govt. machineries.
The islands are closer
to Southeast Asia and the Malacca Strait, a major shipping route for global
trade. The islands also help India monitor and secure its maritime interests.
It provide a base for the Indian Navy and Coast Guard to conduct surveillance,
respond to threats, and deter piracy and illegal activities in the surrounding
waters. India's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) also extends into the waters
around these islands, it also a well-placed to monitor naval and aerial
activities in the region. Keeping in view of the above facts any leak out of
sensitive information to foreign countries may prove detrimental to the
security of our nation especially in the ongoing scenario of international
tensions around the world.
Though the digital development is the need of the hour in every sphere of life, but on the other hand such unregulated digital media channels/ social media handlers may be regulated with proper guidelines and ethics, so that the fragile fabric of these highly strategic islands' security must be taken into consideration. Unlike, the print media which is guided and regulated with proper press laws and registered with Govt of India and the contents in the media are only shared among the concerned, in order to have proper checks and balances, suggested a prominent scribe of these Islands.
