Fate of candidates contesting for lone Lok Sabha seat sealed in EVMs; Will be opened on 04 June 2024

Port Blair: The A&N Islands Parliamentary Constituency went to poll on 19/04/2024 in the first phase of the General Election to Lok Sabha -2024. Eligible voters queued up at their respective Polling Station to exercise their franchise to elect their representative for the 18th Lok Sabha. Despite the sweltering heat, people including senior citizens and first time voters were seen in various Polling Stations of the city and its suburbs, to cast their votes in their respective Polling Booths.

Voters of different age groups expressed their opinions on exercising their right. Various other Polling Stations witnessed long queues of voters lined up to cast their votes fulfilling their fundamental rights. Similar enthusiasm was also witnessed in North and Middle Andaman District and the Nicobar District.

The overall poll percentage in A&N Islands Parliamentary Constituency stood at 63.99%.The Polling percentage in South Andaman was 59.59%, in N&M Andaman it was 72.80% and in Nicobar it was 72.77%.

Polling was conducted in a peaceful and smooth manner throughout the Islands and there was no untoward incident reported from any part of the Islands, informed the Chief Electoral Officer, A&N Islands, Shri B.S. Jaglan, IAS, while interacting with the media persons in the conference hall of A&N Secretariat.

The CEO thanked all the Voters, Agencies/ Departments, Media and others for the conduct of free, fair and smooth elections in A&N Islands. He said there were no complaints by the contesting candidates regarding the elections in ANIPC.

Giving the details about the Polling by PVTGs, the CEO informed that, out of the 84 Shompen tribes, 7 Shompen exercised their franchise. Out of the 68 Onges, 63 persons cast their vote while 33 out of 39 Great Andamanese of Strait Islands exercised their franchise.

The CEO further informed that all the staff of Election Department, Staff of Returning Officer, and State Police Nodal Officer has done a remarkable job and handled all the work diligently for the smooth conduct of Poll. The CEO also thanked all the Polling Parties, Police Personnel, CAPF, CRPF, Volunteers and others engaged in the Polling duty for the smooth conduct of Polling without any hindrance.

During Mock Poll, 4 ballot units, 02 control units, 7 VVPATs were replaced during Mock Poll whereas during Actual Poll, 3 ballot units, 3 Control Units & 7 VVPATs were replaced, the CEO said.

Speaking on the occasion, the SPNO, Smti Monika Bhardwaj, IPS informed that all the Police Officials were on the field and polling was completed on a peaceful note without a single incident in the Islands.

The movement calls for the jail, a "National Memorial," to be declared a "National Pilgrimage Site." Successful Surgery Gives New Life to 2.5-Year-Old Girl Born Without Properly Formed Food Pipe

Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 30: A 2.5-year-old girl, born with a congenital condition where her esophagus (food pipe) was not properly formed, has successfully undergone a highly specialized surgery at ANIIMS (Andaman and Nicobar Islands Institute of Medical Sciences). Immediately after birth, a team of ANIIMS surgeons performed emergency surgery, placing a feeding tube in her abdomen through the stomach to ensure she could receive nutrition. For over two and a half years, the child was fed through this tube, enabling her to gain adequate weight in preparation for a reconstructive surgery to create a functioning food pipe.
