Baratang, May 22: For
the past 15 days, people including tourists, vendors, customers, nearby police
on duty, and locals around Nilambur Jetty have been forced to breathe the foul
odor from the toilets through no fault of their own. The toilet block is
undergoing exterior maintenance, but the inside is in an indescribable
condition.
Sources said that the
husband of the Pradhan of the Gram Panchayat, Mr. Somari Roy, is responsible
for keeping the Panchayat clean, but he has been neglecting this issue and has
been absent for the past several days.
Earlier, "The
cleanliness here was maintained by a private party by collecting charges from
nearby vendors and shops. The Pradhan asked us to stop paying this amount to
the party, and we complied. Since then, cleanliness has not been maintained,
and now it has become a health hazard for everyone around this jetty," a
shopkeeper said on condition of anonymity.
It is dismaying that, being one of the best tourism destinations, the inflow of tourists is huge. As the only convoy point connecting Straight Island to Baratang, everyone must pass through the Nilambur Jetty. Neither the Panchayat nor any party from the tourism industry has come forward to clean up the toilet block and create a good impression for those arriving on the islands.
