Dairy Farm Junction congestion worsens amid Development and Beautification efforts

TMI Correspondent Port Blair, June 19: The Dairy Farm Junction has become more congested recently, possibly due to the brick arrangements that may be laid on a test basis for the forthcoming development or beautification of the junction. Road users at Dairy Farm Junction have expressed great concern about the increased congestion. The space left for vehicle movement is minimal, causing difficulties for heavy vehicles passing through the junction. Developing and beautifying the junction is a good idea, and it is also necessary to construct dividers for safety. However, it should be kept in mind that schools are currently closed and will reopen in the first week of July, leading to a threefold increase in traffic. Additionally, airport passengers use the same road, which will further exacerbate traffic jams. They opined that the newly marked dividing portion on the road should be shortened to maintain the road's width. The dividers should also be constructed suitably according to...

GB Pant Hospital regains trust with expert care amid ongoing challenges

TMI Bureau Port Blair, June 19: The best doctors at GB Pant Hospital now excel in diagnosing and treating a variety of conditions, including cardiology, orthopedics, ophthalmology, ear, nose, and throat (ENT), dermatology, and gastrointestinal diseases, as well as providing other general treatments. Consequently, they are setting new benchmarks in their respective fields. During the initial setup of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands Institute of Medical Sciences (ANIIMS), Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital (GB Pant Hospital) earned a bad reputation for treating the public in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands due to a lack of coordination and management between the two institutions. Years ago, many patients were referred to hospitals on the mainland for further treatment, causing them to suffer financially and face language barriers in other states. However, most patients are now receiving treatment, including surgeries, at GB Pant Hospital, thanks to the skilled hands of the best doctors...

Brave Son Rescues Father from Crocodile's Mouth; Father Taken to GB Pant Hospital with Critical Injuries

TMI Correspondent Diglipur, June 12: In a tragic incident on June 11, 2024, a crocodile attacked a man and his son in Diglipur, seriously injuring both. Mr. Amar Das, 57, and his son, Mr. Manik Das, 23, went to fish at the remote Tatkhali Char in Ambar Char, Diglipur Tehsil, around 3:30 p.m. While Mr. Amar Das was casting a net in knee-deep water, a large saltwater crocodile attacked him from behind. The crocodile gripped Mr. Amar Das around the waist, performing a death roll that severely tore his buttocks, thighs, and chest. Seeing his father in danger, Manik Das jumped into the water and managed to gouge the crocodile's eyes, causing it to release Mr. Amar Das. The crocodile then attacked Manik Das, inflicting serious injuries to his hands and legs. Despite his injuries, Manik Das, with the help of a passerby, managed to drag his father to shore. Due to heavy rain, the shoreline water was turbid, which made it difficult for them to detect the crocodile's presence. Fami...

Government Agencies in A&N Islands use Social Media for Procurement Announcements also, Sparking Debate

TMI Correspondent Port Blair, May 29: Social media platforms have become official channels for government organizations in India, including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The Andaman and Nicobar Police and the Andaman and Nicobar Command, for instance, use 'X' (formerly known as Twitter) to disseminate information. Besides news and updates, procurement and supply related announcements are also shared on these platforms. Recently, the official account of the Superintendent of Police, Car Nicobar, posted details about a Government eMarketplace (GeM) bid for the supply of 10 laundry-type washing machines/drying machines on the international social media platform 'X'. "This might be due to the experience of low or no participation by bidders. However, such issues should be addressed with the Government eMarketplace (GeM) and resolved within the government and business communities in India. Broadcasting it to the international domain is not an appropriate method f...

Foul Odor at Nilambur Jetty: Neglected Toilets Create Health Hazard for Tourists and Locals

TMI Correspondent Baratang, May 22: For the past 15 days, people including tourists, vendors, customers, nearby police on duty, and locals around Nilambur Jetty have been forced to breathe the foul odor from the toilets through no fault of their own. The toilet block is undergoing exterior maintenance, but the inside is in an indescribable condition. Sources said that the husband of the Pradhan of the Gram Panchayat, Mr. Somari Roy, is responsible for keeping the Panchayat clean, but he has been neglecting this issue and has been absent for the past several days. Earlier, "The cleanliness here was maintained by a private party by collecting charges from nearby vendors and shops. The Pradhan asked us to stop paying this amount to the party, and we complied. Since then, cleanliness has not been maintained, and now it has become a health hazard for everyone around this jetty," a shopkeeper said on condition of anonymity. It is dismaying that, being one of the best tourism ...

Residents Struggle with Ship Delays and Shortages; Concerns Mount Over Ship Services Between Car Nicobar and Port Blair

TMI Correspondent Port Blair, May 08: The ship services are the lifeline of the A&N Islands for the transportation of goods and services to various parts of these islands. However, due to delays or the lack of a schedule to the southern group of islands, there is a significant impact on the availability of essential items and necessary travel during emergencies. Some citizens of Car Nicobar Islands have also submitted grievances on the LG's portal regarding ship services. However, after one or two schedules, the service reverts back to its previous condition. "Having to write on the LG's portal each time for each schedule is both frustrating and embarrassing," said a citizen of Car Nicobar on the condition of anonymity. In a letter addressed to the Chief Secretary, the Member of Parliament mentioned that a large number of people, including residents of Car Nicobar Islands and government servants posted there, are facing severe hardships due to the unavailabi...
