Port Blair, Nov 21: "On 19.11.2018, an email was received from US Consulate General, Chennai wherein it was informed that they had received a communication from the mother of Mr. John Chau about her son's visit to North Sentinel Island where he was purportedly attacked. Acting on the information, A&N Police has registered a case vide Cr.No.91/18 dated 20.11.2018 u/s 302/34 IPC at PS Humfrigunj. Further another case at PS Humfrigunj has been registered vide Cr. No. 92/18 dated 20.11.2018 u/s 282/336/304/34 IPC read with sec 7/8 PAT, 1956 in which seven accused persons have been arrested. Who are they? The Sentinelese, a negrito tribe who live on the North Sentinel Island of the Andamans, have not faced incursions and remain hostile to outsiders. The inhabitants are connected to the Jarawa on the basis of physical, as well as linguistic similarities, researchers say. Based on carbon dating of kitchen middens by the Anthropological Survey of India, Sentinelese presence was confirmed in the islands to 2,000 years ago. Genome studies indicate that the Andaman tribes could have been on the islands even 30,000 years ago. How are they protected? The Govt. of India issued the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (Protection of Aboriginal Tribes) Regulation, 1956 to declare the traditional areas occupied by the tribes as reserves, and prohibited entry of all persons except those with authorisation. Photographing or filming the tribe members is also an offence. The rules were amended later to enhance penalties. But restricted area permits were relaxed for some islands recently....

Port Blair, 28 Aug: The Andaman & Nicobar Media Federation (ANMF) has organised its maiden media tour-cum-news coverage visit to various Panchayats of South Andaman today, which was organized with the sole aim to know about the status of various development projects under progress in the South Andaman as well as to know about the issues and problems faced by the rural populace. Despite continuous rain since morning the ANMF determination and media persons' excitement made the programme a grand success. The visit has covered Dhanikhari Dam, Primary Health Centre Tushnabad, Govt. Primary and Middle School Ograbraj, Electricity Office Ograbraj, interaction with Mitakhari area farmers, Tsunami shelters, Govt. PORT BLAIR, Aug 29:A group of youths has raised  Rs. 52,700/ in just three days for Kerala Flood relief.  They collected the money from local shopkeepers and the general public with the intention of donating all the collected money to the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund.  They handed the money on August 27, 2018 to Dhiraj Jha, Chief Manager, SBI, Port Blair who lauded the noble work done by the youths headed by Ehtesham Ahmed Khan, Shubhankar Halder, Anshika Mandal, Pallavi Mandal, Salman Khan and Vicky Wao who also have their own Youtube channel i.e. VickyWao.

Port Blair, Aug 29: The teachers and students of Navy Children School (NCS), Port Blair on Aug 24, 2018 along with civilian volunteers and defence personnel enthusiastically participated in loading 2.5 tons of relief material on board Indian Air Force AN-32 Aircraft for dispatch to flood hit Kerala. Part of this relief material was contributed by the students and staff of the school. This effort was in support of the initiative taken by the Islanders for the Kerala flood victims, which took wings when Vice Admiral Bimal Varma, AVSM, ADC, Commander -in-Chief, Andaman & Nicobar Command (CINCAN) accepted to dispatch the relief material by Air Force aircraft when approached by the Hon'ble Member of Parliament, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Shri Bishnu Pada Ray. Port Blair, Aug 29: On August 27th, 2018 Asthi of former Prime Minister Bharat Ratna Swargiya Atal Bihari Vajpayee was immersed in Indira Point, Campbell Bay by Mr. Vishal Jolly, State President BJP, Mr. Sanjay Singh. State Vice President BJP, E. S. Rajesh, District President BJP, N. Kiran, Mondal President, PRI members and all BJP leaders were present on the occasion. During the Asthi Kalash Yatra from Campbell Bay Airport to Indira Point via Community Hall the large numbers of BJP workers and sympathizers were paid homage to former Prime Minister.

Port Blair, Aug 22: Setting an example, the people of A&N Islands, have taken an initiative to help people of Kerala, who are now suffering from natural calamity. Dozens and Dozens of faceless and responsible Islanders with the help of the MP, Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray, have raised the fund amounting to Rs. 93,910/- (in rupees) and collected the relief materials worth around 25,00,000 for the flood hit people of Kerala. Packing was done with the help of volunteer  students from DBRAIT and officers and men of Indian Coast Guard and Indian Navy. All the rescue kits are being airlifted by Andaman Nicobar Command to Kerala on Aug 21, 2018. Around 2.5MT relief materials were airlifted to Kerala through aircraft of ANC.

Port Blair, 22 Aug: The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested an Assistant Engineer and a Junior Engineer on Aug 21, 2018, both working in Andaman & Lakshadweep Harbour Work Ltd., Port Blair for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs. 22,000/- each from the complainant. The case was registered on a complaint wherein it was alleged that the accused had demanded a bribe from the complainant for allowing him to execute the Road repairing Work. CBI laid a trap and caught both the accused red-handed while demanding and accepting a bribe or Rs. 22,000/- each from the complainant. Both the arrested accused was produced before the Special Court, Port Blair.
